Y lotus is our national flower?
Lotus scientifically known as Nelumbo Nucifera is the National Flower of India. It is a sacred flower and occupies a unique position in the art and mythology of ancient India and has been an auspicious symbol of Indian culture since time immemorial. The Lotus symbolises divinity, fertility, wealth, knowledge and not to forget enlightenment. Lending to its uniqueness, the flower grows in murky waters and rises on a long stalk above the surface to bloom glorious. It is also a symbol of triumph, since the lotus is rooted in the mud and can survive to regerminate for thousands of years. It represents long life, honor, and good fortune.

Untouched by the impurity, lotus symbolises the purity of heart and mind. Human beings are instructed by Indian scripture to live a life of non-attachment, which is very hard. The lotus holds additional significance for Hindus, as it is a symbol of God and used often in religious practices. Then in Indian thought, there is the last and final lotus - Charan Kamal or lotus feet of the Almighty. It was this depth of thought that made the founding fathers of modern India enshrine the lotus in the Constitution as the National Flower.
Reply:Though Lotus grows from water, if you watch, the drops of water never binds the petals. It symbolises how you should live and lead the life, like the lotus in the water. You need to be in this world and never get bonded !!!
Reply:Because it grows in dirty mud and water and is unique to India.

What does a blue lotus symbolize?

I'm planning to get a lotus tattooed on my body soon. I know and understand the general meaning of lotuses, religiously, historically and philosophically.

And I know that the different colors of the lotus flowers have separate meanings. Does anyone specifically know the meaning of a blue lotus?

What does a blue lotus symbolize?
This is the symbol of the victory of the spirit over the senses, of intelligence and wisdom, of knowledge. It is always represented as a partially opened bud, and (unlike the red lotus) its centre is never seen. It is the lotus of Manjusri, and also one of the attributes of Prajnaparamita, the embodiment of the 'perfection of wisdom'.
Reply:You avatar's name, start with ani- are you a Buddhist Nun of Tibetan Buddhism?

I do believe most of the descriptions from web site referred seems to be correct, except most Manjushri's thankgas I saw from three of my schools, where I attend my training all still showing Manjushri sat on Pinkish red lotus flower throne?

However, there are some Bodhisattvas holding blue lotus flowers, most noticeable is Mahāsthāmaprāpta, the Bodhisattva standing on left hand side of Buddha Amitabha.

Else, just the Angry Buddha Dharmapalas are standing on the Blue Lotus thrones.

Reply:i believe it means sacred, because the blue symbolizes Krishna (who is blue), however in general all lotuses represent peace
Reply:A blue lotus is just a special flower, different from pink lotuses.
Reply:It mean just what any member of man-kind wants other to believe..... But in reality it just a beautiful colored plant.............

What specifically does the red lotus mean in Buddhism?

I am thinking about getting a tattoo of a red lotus flower, b/c to my understanding it means compassion and love and all things having to do with the heart. Is this correct? Could anyone verify this, and perhaps give me a more in depth description of what a red lotus might mean? thanks :)

What specifically does the red lotus mean in Buddhism?
Think about it. Tattoos are rather permanent. Try a temporary first. Most Tatoo parlors would be glad to give you one. It lasts about 1 year, unless you really scrub the area with special soap.
Reply:red represents passion and love, Lotus is also the position in meditation.
Reply:Red Lotus-

This symbolizes the original nature of the heart (hrdaya). It is the lotus of love, compassion, passion, activity and all the qualities of the heart. It is the lotus of Avalokitesvara.
