Bad baby name?

My 21 yr old sister is having a baby. She's really into being original and she's been coming up with some not so great names but in her head they are. The most recent one, if it's a boy, is Darth Vadar. She's letting her boyfriend have total control over the name because it's his first born child (something else I don't agree with but I'm biting my tongue on that one). I don't want to offend her or hurt her feelings but I want to somehow change her mind. It's like she doesn't really think about the fact that this isn't a pet you're naming (her pets all have strange names) but it's a child who is going to have to live with this name for the rest of their life. Any suggestions on how to let her know this and maybe suggestions on unique names that won't end up scarring the child for life? For a girl she has the name Lotus Elise after her boyfriend's favorite car but at least it's also a flower and her my sister's middle name.

Bad baby name?
Oh my gosh! What in the world is wrong with your sister? You say that she is 21, but she is acting 12. Yes, her child is going to grow up to resent her and giving him a stupid name like that is going to seriously limit his potential as an adult because EVERYTHING really is in a name. Have you ever heard of ANYONE successful who has a retarded name like that?

I think you should encourage your sister to read the replies you get on this (maybe make a new question if you aren't comfortable with her seeing the wording on this one). She should be ashamed of herself. This is not about HER and showcasing her creativity or whatever. It's about her child and naming your child is no time to be funny or off the wall. Like you said already, it's a human, not a pet. It's okay to name your pet something stupid, but a child is different. How could anyone take him seriously with a name like that? Ask her to imagine this child applying for a power-job or running for president or something. No one will even believe it's his real name. Ask her to imagine him trying to date. "Darth Vader loves Jenny Marie"....sounds ridiculous. She is going to make her child the butt of all jokes and the center of all kinds of negative attention.

Tell her to stop setting her child up for failure and give him a decent name. It should be his decision to change it later if he wants to be Darth Vader, Bob the Builder, Santa Clause, or Figaro. I'm 30 years old and I would still rip a guy to shreds if he had some stupid name like that. Imagine what he would take on the playground.

*throws up hands in disgust*

If she wants to be creative, that's fine. Unique? Sure, go ahead, but don't skate over into stupidsville just because you don't want your child to be Billy or Bobby or whatever. There are lots of semi-obscure names that are not going to get his butt kicked and ridiculed for the rest of his life. Tell her that if she simply HAS to give him some name that is off the wall, the least she could do is give him an ethnic family name that he could at least explain to people and gain a little respect that way. "Yes, my name is ______, but my mother named me that because our family blah blah blah and that person was highly respected in our line..." something like that.

Her child's name is going to shape who he is. If she wants to jack around with his name, let her ponder this for a while:

Reply:Dude, it's not your child, so you don't have any say in it. I understand your concern, given that you'll be sharing a quarter of your DNA with this kid, but sometimes you have to just stand back and enjoy the trainwreck.

That said, you'd be surprised what little detriment you can do to a kid by naming him something strange. Kids can make fun of just about anything. In all honesty, having an asinine name will probably work to his advantage later in life. Instant ice-breaker.
Reply:Explain to her, nicely, that naming her child after a fictional evil villain is a surefire way to have him get teased and picked on mercilessly in school, and a great way to have him hate her for life. If she cares about her son, she'll give him a name that actually sounds like a real name so he doesn't have to put up with the merciless bullying of his classmates.
Reply:Besides the fact that the child will resent the name, we just don't name our children after evil things or people. Seen any Hitler's or Saddam's born lately? Darth is a character, I'll grant that, but he's an evil character. If it is the Star Wars connection she likes, will she consider Annakin? That's not a common name either.
Reply:Darth Vadar? Oh myy.. Well You need to tell your sister to take some control over the situation. And let her know that the child will be teased all through school and and probably for the rest of his life. That would kill his self esteem, and probably make him resent her. Just keep telling her this until she gets the point. If it doesn't work, pray (:
Reply:How sad. She is putting a lifetime handicap on her child. He or she will be teased unmercifully in school and will have a hard time with finding jobs, etc. Your sister and her BF sound terribly immature. They are not ready to have children.

Stop biting your tongue and speak up. Someone has to protect this child.
Reply:Normally I would advise you to keep your opinion quiet... but in this case.... DARTH VADER?? Come on... Tell her the child will resent her for making a joke out of him. Also tell your sister that she has to grow up and think about the child's future. One day the child will be an adult and will not only have to change his name but will disown his mother.
Reply:lets hope she has a girl!!!!!!! in all seriousness just try talking to her and ask her if she would have liked to be called that. remind of the kids she or othersw picked on for having silly names at school, that might do the trick
Reply:sounds strange!! lol

what about; malakai, emoura, maliya, tequia, mia-meela

bit outrageous but that sounds a little like her!!

hope this helped xx
Reply:You can always call him V.D. lol.. oh man it sucks, have someone close to your sister's boyfriend talk him out of it.
Reply:My names darth maul dont make fun of my masters name
Reply:Damn! That is a terrible name for her (or anyone) to give a child. I'm surprised nobody called Child Protective Services on her yet. Giving your kid a messed up name should be considered child abuse.

Darth Vader should not be a child's name at all. A really evil dog or cat, maybe, but not a human. The poor kid will be teased and tortured all his life. Darth is too evil of a name to saddle a child with.

Lotus Elise isn't too much better. I love Elise, but Lotus sounds too pretentious. It sounds like something you'd name a stripper or porn star.

Neither name would look good for when the child grows up and applies for a job. Employers often overlook the applications and resumes of people who have weird or unusual names as opposed to normal names like Catherine and William.

If she's gonna use Lotus, at least she could make the first name Elise and the middle name Lotus. Then she'd have a normal first name and nobody would even have to know her middle name. That takes care of some of the teasing she would go through.

There are alot nicer unique names she and her boyfriend could call their baby. Darth Vader and Lotus Elise are just atrocious! If she wants a flowery name for her daughter, she could try Cassia, Lilia, Aiyana, Laurel, Daphne, Sakura, Acacia, Calla, Hana, Violet, Zara or some other normal name. For the sake of the baby, try to talk her out of those awful names she's coming up with.
Reply:A co-worker of mine had a Star Wars themed wedding complete with the theme song and wedding rings inscribed with "May the Force Be With Us". Very weird wedding!!!

So, naturally when her baby was born they named her Leia.

Your sister and her boyfriend aren't serious about Darth Vader, right? That would be so sad for that kid! Lotus Elise is goofy too! She can't name her kid after a car!

So, here's what you should do--go to your local library and check out a few baby name books. Subtly loan the books to them. If they're still looking for unique names, they can find some in those books too. There are better, unique names other than Darth Vader and Lotus Elise!!! Save those poor children from a lifetime of humiliation!
